Know the Loopholes in Your Home Insurance Policy Before It W

Unless you've specified specific additional coverages, your home insurance plan is likely to be similar to most home insurance plans around the country. Most home insurance plans cover damage to any structures on the property, liabilities for injuries to others on your property, damage to personal belongings at your home and reimbursement for extra costs of living when your home becomes so damaged as to be uninhabitable. However, even the things mentioned as covered are not covered if the cause of the incident is precluded by the insurance company.

Your home insurance plan may say that it doesn't cover preexisting conditions or damage. If you discover your home has termites and hat it has received extensive damage, your home insurer may simply say that the termites were likely there before you purchased the home and it is therefore a preexisting condition unless you have some convincing proof.

Most insurance policies do not include floods and many do not include earthquakes and other natural disasters. You've probably heard about many of the victims of Hurricane Katrina who received no compensation from their insurers for either their home or possessions. However, if your toilet floods your house because the stopper is broke and the drain is clogged, that would be covered by your home insurance.

Make sure you read all of your home insurance policy contract and look for these types of loopholes. If necessary, you can purchase extra home insurance to cover these. Especially consider additional home insurance if you live in an area likely to be affected by a particular natural disaster.
